The short answer
Out of the box, Java and Bedrock players can't join each other's worlds, but a Java server with the Geyser plugin lets both in. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Bedrock runs on phones, tablets, consoles and Windows.
Which edition does each friend have?
If the title screen says Java Edition under the logo, that friend plays Java. Bedrock runs on phones, tablets, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and Windows. On Windows, look for Minecraft for Windows.
| Java Edition | Bedrock Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Windows, macOS and Linux | Phones, tablets, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Windows |
| Changes the game with | Server plugins; mods on the server, players' computers, or both | Add-ons the game downloads when you join |
| Joins a Java server | Yes | Yes, with Geyser |
How do Java and Bedrock players play together?
With Geyser, a plugin that runs on a Java server and translates for Bedrock players. With Floodgate installed too, Bedrock players can join with their Microsoft accounts without owning Java Edition. Geyser works with Paper and with some mods that run only on the server.
Phones, tablets and Windows can add a server by its address. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch only list Mojang's featured servers, so console players need a workaround to reach yours; Geyser's console guide lists the ways in.
If everyone has Java, choose a Java server. If your crew uses both editions, add Geyser. If everyone has Bedrock, choose Bedrock.
Can Bedrock players use Java mods?
Bedrock can't use Java mods; it has add-ons instead. For a Java modpack, everyone needs Java Edition and the pack's required mods. Geyser can't connect Bedrock players to servers that require Java mods on players' computers. To include a console friend, choose Bedrock or a Java server with Geyser that doesn't require players to install mods.
What should our group pick?
- Everyone plays on a computer: Java, with plugins or mods.
- Your crew uses both Java and Bedrock: choose a Java server with Geyser.
- The whole crew is on consoles and phones: Bedrock.
- Everyone wants a Java modpack: choose Java Edition and install the pack's required mods.
What does Radclub run?
Radclub's Minecraft servers run Java Edition, with plugins or mods. Paper and Purpur support Bedrock crossplay through Geyser and Floodgate. Radclub isn't open yet. See the Minecraft page.
